Scott Peck, the American psychiatrist, once said <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShare our similarities, celebrate our differences.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This quotation resonates quite well in schools where no two students are exactly the same. Everyone is uniquely different. You will never find a classroom full of students who are all alike. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Of course, not all students understand concepts in the same way or at the same pace. How can teachers integrate it within the classroom, and why even is this strategy that important?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_Differentiated_Instruction_Important\"><\/span><b>Why is Differentiated Instruction Important?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/254347171_Tips_for_Teaching_Differentiating_Instruction_to_Include_All_Students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Algozzine and Anderson<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2007) argued that many students continued to function at the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;margins\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of their classrooms, never completely achieving their potential, despite teachers&#8217; best efforts to encourage them. In essence, the issue was the students&#8217; wide range of differences. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The final goal, the exams, and the preparation for them were the same for all students, despite the fact that each student learns differently. The authors proposed that differentiated instruction was the solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">The idea of differentiated education was not new. These experts suggest that it dates back to the time when schools had just one classroom and children were taught in groups according to their grade levels, with differentiated instruction for the topic, activities, and final output. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/271406819_Differentiated_Instruction_Making_Informed_Teacher_Decisions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">WattsTaffe et al.<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2012) acknowledged that differentiated teaching was not new, they said that it was becoming more significant as a result of the large number of students who did not achieve the highest levels of skills necessary at school.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Differentiated teaching, according to Tomlinson and Allan (2000), is more than just one tactic or set of tactics. A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;way of thinking about teaching and learning&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was involved. Tomlinson also highlighted that differentiated instruction was not, in and of itself, an instructional method, a guide for teaching, or something a teacher performed to fill a hole in the curriculum. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Leadership-Differentiating-Schools-Classrooms-Tomlinson\/dp\/0871205025#:~:text=Tomlinson%20and%20Allan&#039;s%20book%20offers,levels%2C%20in%20their%20own%20classrooms.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asserted that it was a teaching philosophy founded on a number of convictions:<\/span><i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students of the same age differed in terms of their readiness to learn, their learning styles, their interests, their experiences and backgrounds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These differences were substantial enough to warrant the students being taught different things at different speeds and with different support.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students learnt best when an adult pushed them just beyond the point where they could work without assistance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students learnt best when a connection was made between the curriculum content and their personal interests and experiences.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students learnt best when the learning was natural.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students learnt best when they felt they were respected members of the school community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main job of the school was to maximize the potential of every student.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2864\" style=\"width: 563px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2864\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.skolera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-1.jpeg\" alt=\"unfair evaluation - standards based grading scale\" width=\"563\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/skolera.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-1.jpeg 563w, https:\/\/skolera.com\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/image-1-300x209.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: https:\/\/marquetteeducator.wordpress.com\/2012\/07\/12\/climbthattree\/<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Examples_of_Differentiated_Instruction\"><\/span><b>Examples of Differentiated Instruction\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; Educators have started to shift their focus towards using <\/span><b>assessment data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to assist in the modification of the curriculum for the benefit of students with different interests and abilities. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">According to differentiated teaching, learning is most successful when teachers can identify students&#8217; present functioning levels and preferred learning styles, and then apply this knowledge to guide students toward a higher functioning level and more developed learning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another strategy of differentiated instruction is the <\/span><b>flexible grouping<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of students. This includes the division of students with similar abilities into small groups or individually to work together on their assigned task\/s which are pre-adjusted according to their interests, abilities and pace of learning.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This might interest you: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/skolera.com\/en\/blog\/modern-methods-teaching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Modern Methods Of Teaching<\/a><\/span> That Make An Awesome Classroom<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study carried out on the idea of flexible grouping by <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/234772384_The_Effects_of_Grouping_Practices_and_Curricular_Adjustments_on_Achievement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tieso <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2005 found that there was considerable and noticeable student achievement within a classroom that used this strategy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Of course, teachers should use assessment data beforehand to ascertain the validity of such a strategy on each group of students and determine the objectives and desired learning outcomes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another effective strategy for differentiation is <\/span><b>curriculum compacting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curriculum compacting<\/span><\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cis another process that can be used to eliminate or modify work that may already be mastered, and thus enable students to prove that they already know the course content. Curriculum compacting is an instructional technique that is specifically designed to make appropriate curricular adjustments for students in any curricular area and at any grade level. Essentially, the procedure involves:\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1) defining the goals and outcomes of a particular unit or segment of instruction<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2) determining and documenting which students have already mastered most or all of a specified set of learning outcomes<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(3) providing replacement strategies for material already mastered through the use of instructional options that enable a more challenging and productive use of the student&#8217;s time.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">In one study on curriculum compacting or targeted students in one or more academic areas, 40 to 50 % of standard classroom material was condensed in a study on the topic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">There were no changes in the treatment and control groups&#8217; post-test achievement results in math concepts, math computation, social studies, and spelling when teachers cut as much as 50% of the usual curriculum activities and resources for the targeted students.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Differentiated Instruction in Math &amp; Science\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">On achievement post-tests in science, the students who had between 40 and 50 % of their curriculum deleted actually outperformed their counterparts in the control group. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;
